There's no "magic bullet" for preventing cancer, but there are dietary changes you can make that, when combined, can reduce your risk of this disease. Many experts believe that at least 50% of cancer cases could be averted with dietary changes. But since it's tough for people to alter eating habits, some experts believe that supplements may be needed to make up for existing nutritional deficiencies.
Nutrition is most likely to have an impact on the early precancerous stages known as initiation and progression. THE "SCIENCE" OF ELLAGIC ACID CONSUMPTION IN CANCER PREVENTION
One of the pioneers in cancer prevention research is Dr. Daniel Nixon (see The Cancer Recovery Eating Plan, Times Books, NY, 1994). Dr. Nixon's lab at the Hollings Cancer Institute in the Medical University of South Carolina has examined the ability of Ellagic Acid to prevent colon and cervical cancers from developing. Preliminary evidence generated by his team of researchers has indicated that Ellagic Acid can slow the proliferation of both human colon and cervical cancer cells grown in experimental systems outside of the body.
These findings have led to the hypothesis that Ellagic Acid may be useful in humans susceptible to either of these two cancers. While not yet complete, clinical studies are in progress at the Medical University of South Carolina and studies in women susceptible to cervical cancer are under way. The colon trial will measure Ellagic Acid's ability to prevent the formation of colon polyps (which may be the precursor to colon cancer) and/or slow the growth of rapidly proliferating colon cells in human papilloma virus, which is responsible for this disease. These clinical evaluations will be conducted at the Medical University of S.C. and the University of Madrid Medical School in Madrid, Spain.
Some of the data published by Dr. Nixon and his team at the Medical University of South Carolina is presented here.
Following exposure to Ellagic Acid from red raspberries, human cervical cancer cells, infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV), die within several days due to a process termed apoptosis (normal cell death).
Ellagic Acid causes the growth cycle (G1) arrest of cancer cells, thus, inhibiting cell division (mitosis) and cellular proliferation.
Ellagic Acid from red raspberries prevents destruction of a cellular regulatory gene, P53, by HPV oncogenies (genes responsible for cancer induction) in cervical cells (p53 is regarded as the safeguard of normal cellular division and if the P53 is inactivated, abnormal cell division/proliferation ensues).
Similar protective effects were observed in breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, colon, leukemia and prostate cancer cells exposed to Ellagic Acid.
Consumption of 1 cup (150 grams) of fresh red raspberries (the equivalent of 40 milligrams of Ellagic Acid) resulted in the appearance of circulating levels of Ellagic Acid in the serum one hour after ingestion. Five of HTN's Ellagic Acid 800 mg capsules equal approximately 40 milligrams or more of pure Ellagic Acid Extract, similar to research.
In summary, the data from Dr. Nixon's lab and other investigators indicates that Ellagic Acid (1) activates detoxifying enzymes in the liver resulting in the clearing of cancer-causing chemicals (mutagens) in the serum; (2) prevents the binding of carcinogens to cellular DNA; (3) serves as an antioxidant in the scavenging and clearance of highly destructive oxygen free radicals; (4) induces apoptosis (programmed normal cell death) in cancerous cells; and (5) stimulates the immune system for the destruction of cancerous cells. Each of these attributes were found to be important in reducing the incidence of cancer in experimental models.
Finally, while the mechanism(s) are not yet fully known, research performed in Europe indicate that Ellagic Acid may also be useful in reducing the incidence of birth defects, promoting wound healing, and limiting chemically induced liver fibrosis. In addition, some investigators now believe that Ellagic Acid may be useful in the prevention of heart disease and periodontal (gum) disease.

MILWAUKEE
Nearly 18 percent of American women and 8 percent of American men carry the sexually transmitted virus that causes half of all cases of cervical cancer, according to the first prevalence of the virus.
Dr. Judith Wasserheit, director of the STD Prevention Program at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday that the figures were in line with researchers' expectations.
At the same time, she said: “That's a substantial portion of the population and it's probably a low-end estimate.”
Also, gonorrhea cases are rising again, especially among young people, after nearly two decades of decline, while syphilis is at an all-time low, CDC officials said Tuesday at the National STD Prevention Conference in Milwaukee.
The human papilloma virus causes more than 95 percent of cervical cancer cases, with the HPV-16 strain accounting for half of them, Wasserheit said. Black women ages 20 to 29 had the highest rates of HPV-16 infection, at 36 percent. Overall, 19.1 percent of blacks carry the strain, compared with 12.5 percent of whites, according to the study led by CDC researcher Dr. Katherine Stone.
An estimated 20 million Americans carry genital HPV infections that can be passed on through sexual contact, and there are about 5.5 million new infections every year. HPV, which also causes genital warts and penile and anal cancer, is the most common STD among sexually active young people, Wasserheit said.
Condoms can reduce the risk of spreading the virus, but it can be transmitted through even minor cuts in the skin.
Overall, more than 65 million Americans are infected with one or more sexually transmitted diseases.

Cancer is the most feared of all diseases
People immediately associate cancer with dying. Unlike other killer diseases, cancer usually causes a slow death involving pain, suffering, mental anguish, and a feeling of hopelessness. In addition, the mental and physical stress it puts on loved ones and caretakers is beyond calculation.
What is cancer?
You have 76 trillion cells in your body that must constantly under-go reproduction if the body is to remain alive and functioning correctly. Some of these cells reproduce every few days while others reproduce after a much longer period. As each old cell reaches the end of its life cycle, it reproduces and is replaced by a fresh young cell. This natural process is called apoptosis. The normal death rate of cells is controlled by a "biological clock" type of gene called the P53 gene.
We know that most cancers are initiated by the action of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with at least one unpaired electron. These unpaired electrons want and need a partner. Consequently, the unstable free radicals, which have the ability to attract electrons from other atoms or molecules, go about swiping electrons from other stable atoms or molecules. This taking of a electron from another atom means that the free radical is now balanced and is no longer a free radical. But the atom or molecule from which the electron was taken is now damaged, and it becomes a free radical. This sets off a domino type chain reaction of damage within the body. Similar to little hand grenades exploding within the cell structure.
In their reckless search for electrons, free radicals do a lot of structural damage to healthy cells. Cumulative free radical damage causes the plasma membrane of the cell to break down. When this happens, transportation of nutrients, oxygen, and water into the cell and removal of waste products and toxins out of the cell become compromised. This causes the cell to either starve to death, die in a sea of accumulated toxic waste, or, if the DNA of the cell is also affected, it can cause the cell to reproduce daughter cells incorrectly, thereby causing cell mutation.
The mutated cell is now genetically incorrect and, therefore, does not behave as a normal cell. The P53 gene of the cell is affected and the natural biological clock is stopped, often eliminating apoptosis (natural cell death). Without apoptosis the mutated cancer cell doesn't die. In order to sustain its growth a cancer cell steals nutrients from surrounding cells and begins to rapidly reproduce damaged, mutated cells in geometric progression ( 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.). Over a period of time the cancer cell develops into a cancerous mass or a tumor. Cancerous cells from the mass or tumor can be transported to other tissues or organs where they imbed and begin to grow and reproduce (metastasize).
In recent years the ability of the medical community to diagnose and treat cancer has greatly improved. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority of cancers still lack effective treatments. The choices for conventional treatment involve some form of surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. These procedures are invasive, treat only the symptoms, and often cause side effects more severe than the disease. Dr. Alan Levine of the University of California Medical School observes, "Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy." He also states that "Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon, or lung cancers. This fact has been documented for over a decade..."
Conventional methods treat cancer as a localized disease to be treated in a localized manner by cutting out the tumor, irradiating it, or flooding the body with toxic (and often carcinogenic) drugs in order to destroy the tumor. On the other hand, natural healing methods consider cancer to be a systemic disease. Emphasis is placed on rebuilding the body's natural immunity and strengthening its natural ability to destroy cancer cells. The key is to Alkalize, Cleanse, Nourish and Balance the Body, allowing it to heal itself naturally.
Data on cancer (which has been corroborated by the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society) found that 80-90 percent of all cancers are produced as a result of life-style factors, (smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise), exposure to chemicals, environmental factors, and dietary and nutritional practices.

Since life-styles, environmental factors, and nutrition are the most common risk factors for developing cancer, it stands to reason that many of these cancers can be destroyed, substantially reduced, or their development eliminated by reducing or eliminating the risk factors. There are some risk factors like air and water which are difficult to control. However, you have almost total control over some of the other known risk factors such as smoking, alcohol, intake of chemicals and drugs, and diet and nutrition.
Diet and nutrition appear to be factors in 60 percent of women's cancers, 40 percent of men's cancers, and about 75 percent of cardiovascular diseases. Space doesn't allow for a discourse on diet and what foods to eat to reduce possible cancer development, except to say, reduce your intake of fat, red meat, smoked meats or those preserved by nitrates, and eliminate from your diet white sugars, white flour products, and especially all soft drinks. They are up to 500 times more acidic than your blood, causing a cascade of health problems.
Unfortunately, most doctors don't counsel cancer patients or those that are at high risk for cancer about nutrition. However, research shows that ingesting the correct foods and supplements may prevent cancer, boost the immune system and energy levels, and give the body a fighting chance to prevent cancer or heal itself. A health diet strengthens the immune system, slows tumor growth, protects against further metastasis and reduces the overwhelming negative side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
Studies repeatedly show that there is a substantial reduction in cancer risk in those who eat or juice the necessary amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. Only nine percent of Americans eat the recommended five daily servings. Research has found that it is the antioxidants in fruit and vegetables that confer additional protection against free radically induced cancer. Low blood levels of antioxidants are associated with an increase in death rates from many types of cancer.
One of the most promising areas in cancer prevention involving nutrition is in the area of chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is NOT chemotherapy. Instead of toxic poisons, chemoprevention employs nutraceuticals to develop optimal health and to counteract cancer and other chronic and degenerative diseases.

Ellagic Acid is a member of the ellagitannin family of compounds. Ellagic acid may be one the most potent ways to fight Cancer. Ellagic Acid is an ellagitannin found in red raspberries. Ellagic Acid, a phenolic compound, is a proven anti-carcinogen, anti-mutagen, and anti-cancer initiator!
Research conducted at the Hollings Cancer Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) indicates that Ellagic Acid slows the growth of abnormal colon cells in humans, prevents the development of cells infected with human papilloma virus (HPV) which is linked to cervical cancer, and promotes apoptotic growth (natural death) of prostate cancer cells. HOW DOES IT WORK? Ellagic Acid is a phenolic compound that has become known as a potent anti-carcinogenic/anti-mutagenic compound. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Ellagic Acid itself is not thought to be naturally present in plants. Instead, polymers of gallic acid and hexahydroxydipenoyl (HHDP) are linked to glucose centers to form the class of compounds known as ellagitannins. When two gallic acid groups become linked side by side within a tannin molecule an HHDP group is formed. Ellagic Acid is the result when the HHDP group is cleaved from the tannin molecule and spontaneously rearrages. It is the ellagitannins that are present in red raspberries. The Meeker Red Raspberry is the best source of Ellagic Acid, followed by the Chiliwak and Willamette. The Meeker variety is specific to the Pacific Northwest and is grown primarily for commercial use in Washington State. The availability to the body of Ellagic Acid from dietary sources has only been confirmed with red raspberries. Other foods such as strawberries, pomegranates, and walnuts contain far lesser amounts of Ellagic Acid. The bioavailability from these has not yet been confirmed!
